About

Koppa Wood Design began in Costa Mesa, California, and is now based in Japan, where we design and make furniture, lighting, and small objects. We aim to create pieces with a look and presence that bring a small sense of joy to everyday life.

It all began with wood offcuts found in a furniture workshop. Seeing beautiful wood with distinctive grain and excellent quality left unused inspired us to think about what we could make from it. The name “Koppa” comes from the Japanese word “木っ端,” meaning scraps or small pieces of wood.

We began by making trays, vases, and other small objects from these offcuts, gradually expanding into lighting and furniture. We value the way a single light can change the atmosphere of a room, as well as the interest that comes from combining different materials, such as wood and cork. Drawing inspiration from natural forms and familiar scenes, we create pieces that add a little playful character to everyday life.
